One of my favorite signs to make is a messy paint sign. They are fun and crazy and chaotic which is right up my alley.

This was a wood sign I picked up from the Dollar General. That’s right, Dollar General. I like going places that I can get stuff cheap and make it into something spectacular.

Step One:

The first step is picking your colors. For this particular messy paint project, I used different tones of light blue and browns. I used acrylic paints that I always have on hand. I normally buy the fifty cent Apple Barrel ones from Walmart. Again, you don’t need to spend a whole lot of money to craft.

Using a foam brush, I placed the paint all over the place. There was no rhyme or reason for any of the strokes. The crazier the better. Make sure it is completely dry before you decide to lay your vinyl. Now is a good time to cut out the said vinyl.

Step 2:

The next step would be to design in Design Space what you want on the sign. For this particular sign, I just typed out, “take me home country roads.” I played around with sizing and different fonts. I used contact paper from the Dollar Tree. Again, no need to go way out. I loaded the contact paper onto my Cricut mat and cut the design. Using clear contact paper, I transferred the design from the paper backing onto my sign.

Again, make sure the paint is completely dry. I like to let them set over night if I can. If you lay the transfer paper down and peel it up while it is tacky or still wet, it can pull up your paint which will ruin your design. I’ve been there and done that.

Step 3:

It is at this point that you can paint the darker color over the design. I have tried to do white over the design but it just didn’t look good at all. Let it dry completely as well. I try to let it dry over night or for a good few hours.

Step 4:

Once completely dry, you will then use a pick to pull the vinyl up. At that point, you could leave it as is or you can use a clear coat to seal it. With this particular sign, I left it as is.
